Community and fellowship — 1 Samuel 2:25-32

Community and fellowship

Today’s Scripture: 1 Samuel 2:25-32 (KJV)

  1. If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the Lord would slay them.
  2. And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the Lord, and also with men.
  3. And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?
  4. And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?
  5. Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
  6. Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
  7. Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
  8. And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.

Guided reflection

Read 1 Samuel 2:25-32 slowly, then read the surrounding chapter. Follow the people, choices and consequences in the narrative. A recorded action is not automatically an example to imitate; consider how it relates to God’s faithfulness and justice. Attend especially to 1 Samuel 2:27: “And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?” Observe: Who is speaking or acting, and what changes across these verses? Identify a word, action or contrast in 1 Samuel 2:25-32 that helps you explain the passage in your own words. Reflect: What does this passage teach about our responsibilities toward other people? Ground your answer in 1 Samuel 2:27 and its surrounding verses. If the connection to this month’s theme is indirect, let the passage’s own meaning lead. Respond: Reach out to one person who may be overlooked and listen before offering advice. Write one sentence explaining how your response follows from 1 Samuel 2:25-32, and return to it this evening.

Today’s prayer

Father, as I consider 1 Samuel 2:27, build patience and generosity in my relationships. Let the truth of this passage correct my assumptions and shape my response today. Help me practise what is faithful to Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
