Courage and spiritual endurance — Genesis 49:17-24

Courage and spiritual endurance

Today’s Scripture: Genesis 49:17-24 (KJV)

  1. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.
  2. I have waited for thy salvation, O Lord.
  3. Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.
  4. Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.
  5. Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words.
  6. Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:
  7. The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him:
  8. But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)

Guided reflection

Read Genesis 49:17-24 slowly, then read the surrounding chapter. Read within the story of creation, covenant and Israel’s formation. Distinguish God’s commands to Israel from the way Christians apply their enduring lessons through Christ. Attend especially to Genesis 49:19: “Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.” Observe: Who is speaking or acting, and what changes across these verses? Identify a word, action or contrast in Genesis 49:17-24 that helps you explain the passage in your own words. Reflect: What response to difficulty is encouraged here, and what shortcuts does it rule out? Ground your answer in Genesis 49:19 and its surrounding verses. If the connection to this month’s theme is indirect, let the passage’s own meaning lead. Respond: Face one postponed responsibility prayerfully, without retaliating or giving in to fear. Write one sentence explaining how your response follows from Genesis 49:17-24, and return to it this evening.
