Courage and spiritual endurance — Ephesians 6:9-16

Courage and spiritual endurance

Today’s Scripture: Ephesians 6:9-16 (KJV)

  1. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.
  2. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
  3. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
  4. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
  5. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
  6. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
  7. And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
  8. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Guided reflection

Read Ephesians 6:9-16 slowly, then read the surrounding chapter. Trace the writer’s argument and the needs of the first readers. Connect practical instructions with what the letter teaches about Christ, grace and the life of the church. Attend especially to Ephesians 6:11: “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Observe: Who is speaking or acting, and what changes across these verses? Identify a word, action or contrast in Ephesians 6:9-16 that helps you explain the passage in your own words. Reflect: What response to difficulty is encouraged here, and what shortcuts does it rule out? Ground your answer in Ephesians 6:11 and its surrounding verses. If the connection to this month’s theme is indirect, let the passage’s own meaning lead. Respond: Face one postponed responsibility prayerfully, without retaliating or giving in to fear. Write one sentence explaining how your response follows from Ephesians 6:9-16, and return to it this evening.

Today’s prayer

Father, as I consider Ephesians 6:11, give me courage joined with humility. Let the truth of this passage correct my assumptions and shape my response today. Help me practise what is faithful to Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
